Brownill Vickers represents a multi-faceted firm of Chartered Surveyors formed as long ago as 1884. The firm, in addition to dealing with commercial and industrial property, specialise in the licensed and leisure market.

We afford management expertise in respect of all property classifications. We operate from the centre of the country from offices in the central professional area of Sheffield. Whilst our general commercial agency may be classed as being regional we operate on a UK basis as far as licensed and leisure property is concerned.

Brownill Vickers has recently converted from being a Partnership into Brownill Vickers Limited. We remain focused and committed to our clients needs affording the same personal approach and service levels of the highest order.

The residential department remains to be run as a partnership known as Brownill Vickers Professional Property Services which has a slightly different partnership profile. A full list of partners can be obtained upon request.

Martin J Nicholson MRICS FAVLP ABII

Martin has worked at Brownill Vickers since 1991 and has been Managing Partner and then Managing Director since 2003.

He is a Specialist business and property valuer and has in the past frequently valued not only public houses, but golf courses, bowling centres, restaurants, hotels, post offices, MOT stations, riding schools, coffee shops, butchers, hairdressers and even Funeral Directors; in fact all business’s where an element of the value is derived from good will and profit. He has many years of experience in the HMO market place – again, where an element of the value is based on turnover and investment profit. He loves valuing small business of all types.

Martin is a qualified RICS Registered Valuer, Auctioneer and Chartered Surveyor. Martin is a member of the AVLP www.avlp.com (Association of Valuers of Licensed Property) and the BII. Martin was presented with a certificate in 2013 for his contribution to licensed and leisure trade by the FLVA www.flva.co.uk (Federation of Licensed Victuallers Association). Martin has a broad range of experience, something that is often unusual now for valuers to have relevant experience in so many types of property. Martin initially had experience with Prudential Property Services, carrying out residential work and then a National Commercial firm carrying out valuations and surveys on warehouses, industrial units and offices, before joining Brownill Vickers. Initially at Brownill Vickers he worked in the residential department and was in fact involved in bringing ARLA (Association of Residential Letting Agents) to Sheffield in 1992.Martin qualified In 1994.

Today he has a broad range of experience in all commercial properties and a recognised specialism in licensed and leisure premises and is often involved in carrying out formal valuations and surveys for a range of banks, breweries and pub companies as well as individual instructions. In addition he carries out rent review assessments and negotiations and provides, where necessary, expert witness submissions. He has also been involved with Camra tests since 2002, which had been the main planning test for the viability of licensed property, before community assist value submissions became the norm in 2015.

An experienced negotiator, he has acted as vendors agent and purchaser’s agent on many sales and was heavily involved in the licensed sector managed house transfers that occurred from 1995 through to the 2005, including Bass Lease Company, Punch and Vanguard. Martin is a corporate member and supporter of the FLVA and a member of the BII. He is on the board of the AVLP and also Assistant Treasurer there. He is a voluntary Board Director at Abbeydale Sports Club www.abbeydalesportsclub.co.uk. In addition he was a Best Bar None assessor in Sheffield City Centre from 2009 to 2014.

Martin today, with his broad range of experience can be found advising clients on purchase or sale, in all commercial and licensed/leisure sectors, carrying our rent reviews or valuing property for many of the high street lenders or private clients. He travels throughout the Country, but is based in Sheffield.

Lee Sidebottom
Lee heads up the surveying department at Brownill Vickers. In addition to providing Schedules of Dilpidations, Schedules of Condition and Pre-acquisition Reports for all types of commercial property, Lee also has over 10 years experience of valuations on retail, office and industrial premises within the Yorkshire and Humberside areas.

Lee became a member of the RICS in 2002 and since then has gained a wealth of experience acting for a wide variety of clients. He has a reputation as being a hard working and conscientious surveyor.

Lee is a Director of the Company and in addition to his surveying role he also implements and oversees quality procedures throughout the practice.

Lee is an active sports enthusiast regularly playing 5-a-side Football and enjoys spending time with his family.

Robin Curtis

Robin is responsible for the Agency and Professional Services departments involving unlicensed property and has been with Brownill Vickers since 1999.

Robin has a strong involvement in all facets of valuation as well as Landlord and tenant matters for owners, occupiers and investors alike. Robin also heads the property management section of the firm dealing with a large portfolio of residential and commercial properties valued in excess of £25 million.

Robin has a wealth of experience involving the South Yorkshire and North East Derbyshire marketplace and is committed to affording a professional appraoch with a personal touch. Robin has a firm grounding in general practice surveying and is a Director of the Company. Robin is a member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and a registered valuer.

Associate

Fiona Kelk

Joined the firm with a BA (Hons) in Economics behind her in 1992. Fiona initially worked in the valuation and sales department, being heavily involved in managed house transfers.

Fiona trained as a valuer with the highly respected former Partner of Brownills, John Jenkinson and has worked in the complex world of licensed property changeover/ fixtures valuations since 1999.

She is a Fellow of the Association of Licensed Property Valuers. Fiona is a well respected and popular valuer known for an honest and practical approach to her work and dealing with clients. Fiona also has broad experience in leasehold assignments.

Practice Consultants

Rodger Vickers
Joined the practice in 1964, is primarily involved in licensed and leisure property and specialises in licensed property leases and rentals, dispute resolution and Expert Witness services. Rodger is a Fellow of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, an Associate of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, a member of the Expert Witness Institute, a Vice President and Fellow of the Association of Valuers of Licensed Property and a Fellow of the Restaurant Property Advisors society.
