In 1884, a surveyor and auctioneer by the name of William Brownill established his business at 82 Queen Street in the heart of Sheffield. More than 135 years later, the same firm still occupies premises at the very same address.
First World War
Joseph Hartle was tragically killed during the First World War and his records and files were sold to William Brownill. However, the Hartle name did not end with Joseph as his two sons, Noel and Joseph Junior went on to set up J.H. Hartle & Sons, acting in direct competition with William Brownill.
In 1924, J.H. Hartle & Sons took on Leslie Vickers who was just 14 years old at the time.
Death of William
Upon his death, the business owned by William Brownill was left to his partner Charles Webster and his son John Brownill (more commonly known as Jonty). The firm then became known as Brownill & Webster.
In 1942, A.E. Wilby & Son of Barnsley took over the practice when Charles Webster died whilst Jonty was serving in the RAF in North Africa. On his return from the war, Jonty eventually managed to buy back the business.
By 1947, Leslie Vickers had become a partner at J.H. Hartle & Sons.
in 1965, following the retirement of Noel Hartle, the firm became known as Hartle Sons & Vickers. The business was fast expanding into general, commercial and residential property.
For some years, J.H. Hartle & Sons and Brownill Spencer & Fleetwood were the only firms of specialist licensed property valuers in the region and competition became intense. In 1989, however, the firms merged to become Brownill Vickers.
Over the course of the past 30 plus years, the work undertaken by Brownill Vickers has evolved significantly. Whilst maintaining a substantial stake in the ever-changing licensed property industry, the firm has considerably expanded its General Practice capacity. Within the last 2 years, the expansion of the business has included the opening of a second Brownill Vickers office, located in Barnsley, following the acquisition of the reputable and well-established Stanhope Property Consultancy.
